Fantasy hockey points leagues: ESPN and Yahoo scoring explained
In a points league every stat has a fixed point value, and your players’ stats add up to one score. ESPN’s default for 2026-27 gives skaters 2 points per goal, 1 per assist, 0.5 per power-play point, 0.5 per shorthanded point, 0.1 per shot on goal, 0.1 per hit and 0.5 per blocked shot; goalies get 4 per win, -2 per goal against, 0.2 per save, 3 per shutout and 1 per overtime loss. Those weights, not a player’s reputation, decide who is valuable, so the first job in any points league is to read your league’s values.
- Points leagues reward volume: games played, ice time, shots and power-play time.
- On ESPN’s default a blocked shot is worth a quarter of a goal; a hit is worth a twentieth.
- Yahoo’s points setup currently prices shots four times higher than ESPN does.
- Nothing can be punted: every stat counts, every night.

Fantrax, CBS and Sleeper leagues have no single default worth quoting; commissioners set every value. The principles below apply to any set of weights.
What the weights mean in practice
Convert everything into goals to see who matters. On ESPN’s default, a defenseman with 150 blocked shots and 100 hits earns 85 points from those two stats alone (75 + 10), the same as 42 and a half goals. A forward who takes 250 shots earns 25 points for them. Blocks, not hits, are the peripheral that moves the needle on ESPN.
Under the values Yahoo’s setup page shows, the same 250 shots are worth 100 points, a third of a goal each. High-volume shooters gain a lot of value there, and penalty minutes and plus/minus add up for physical, minute-eating players.
30 saves, 2 goals against, win = 30 × 0.2 − 2 × 2 + 4 = 6 points
- Same start on Yahoo’s setup values
- 30 × 0.2 − 2 × 1 + 4 = 8 points
- A 25-save, 4-goal loss on ESPN
- 25 × 0.2 − 4 × 2 = −3 points
ESPN’s -2 per goal against makes bad starts expensive, so the goalie on a strong defensive team matters. Saves pay everywhere, so a busy goalie who keeps his team in games can outscore a goalie who wins more but faces fewer shots.
How to win a points league
- Play the most games. Points are totals, so an extra game is roughly an extra night of production. Fill every lineup slot every night and lean on teams with four-game weeks.
- Chase ice time and power-play time. A first-unit power-play role adds both the goal or assist and the PPP bonus, and top-pair defensemen play the most minutes.
- Value defensemen by your weights. If blocks pay 0.5, a shot-blocking defenseman who also plays the power play can rival a second-line forward.
- Pay for goalie starts. Wins and saves both need the goalie in the net, so a workhorse starter is worth more than a better goalie in a timeshare.
- Compare against replacement, not zero. A center scoring 2.5 points a game matters less if the waiver wire has 2.3-point centers every week.

Frequently asked questions
How does ESPN fantasy hockey points scoring work?
ESPN’s default points league for 2026-27 gives skaters 2 per goal, 1 per assist, 0.5 per power-play point, 0.5 per shorthanded point, 0.1 per shot, 0.1 per hit and 0.5 per blocked shot. Goalies get 4 per win, -2 per goal against, 0.2 per save, 3 per shutout and 1 per overtime loss.
Does ESPN count plus/minus or penalty minutes in points leagues?
Not by default. ESPN’s default points scoring has no plus/minus, penalty minutes or faceoffs. Your commissioner can add them, so check the scoring list on your league’s settings page.
What is Yahoo’s fantasy hockey points scoring?
Yahoo’s head-to-head points setup page currently shows goals 3, assists 2, plus/minus 1, penalty minutes 0.5, power-play points 1 and shots 0.4, with wins 4, goals against -1, saves 0.2 and shutouts 2. A Yahoo help article lists different values, so confirm in your league settings.
Are defensemen good in fantasy hockey points leagues?
It depends on the weights. On ESPN’s default, a blocked shot is worth 0.5, so a defenseman with 150 blocks earns 75 points from blocks alone. Defensemen who block shots and play on the power play are strong; pure offensive defensemen without either are closer to replacement level.
How much is a goalie start worth in ESPN points?
A 30-save, 2-goal win is worth 6 points on ESPN’s default (6 for saves, -4 for goals against, 4 for the win). A shutout win with 30 saves is 13. A 25-save, 4-goal loss is -3, which is why goalie choice matters.
Should I punt categories in a points league?
No. Points leagues have no categories to concede; every stat adds to one total. The equivalent move is ignoring stats your league values lightly, such as hits on ESPN’s 0.1, when comparing players.
How does Edgehalla handle points leagues?
Who Should I Start has an ESPN points profile and a Yahoo points profile, and signed-in managers can apply a connected league’s own scoring. Connected ESPN and Fantrax leagues get a weekly dashboard scored with the league’s settings.
