What this tool does

Role trends compares every skater’s average time on ice and power-play time over their latest games with the games before them: five against five once a player has ten games this season, and three or four a side before that. Rising minutes often come before rising production, making this an early signal for waiver pickups.

How to use it

  1. Look at the change in total ice time to find players whose role is growing.
  2. Check the power-play columns: a new spot on the first power-play unit is one of the strongest fantasy signals.
  3. Search a player to confirm a lineup change you heard about.
  4. Cross-check promising names with the category finder before you add them.

Where the data comes from

Ice time and power-play time come from NHL game data for each skater’s most recent games. During the preseason and the first week of the regular season there are fewer recorded games, so trends fill in as games are played. Historical rates describe what happened, they are not projections.

Frequently asked questions

Why use five-game windows?
Five games is long enough to smooth out a single odd game but short enough to catch a line change or power-play promotion quickly. In the first weeks of a season the windows shrink to three or four games a side so the comparison stays within this season.
Does more ice time mean more fantasy points?
Not always, but ice time and power-play time are among the most reliable leading indicators of shots, points and peripheral stats.
Why are some players missing?
A skater needs at least six games this season for a this-season comparison. Players with fewer are listed at the end, with last season’s final games filling in and marked “incl. last season”. Use the Games menu to see last season’s finish on its own.
