Goalie categories
Yahoo default: W, GAA, SV%, SO. Many ESPN and Fantrax leagues add SV.
Enter W, GAA, SV and SV% for both teams, exactly as your fantasy app shows them for this week. The calculator does the rest.
GAA and save percentage calculator
GAA = goals against × 60 ÷ minutes. SV% = saves ÷ shots against. Fantasy apps pool all your goalies' goals, minutes and shots; they do not average each goalie's GAA.
Protecting ratios vs chasing wins and saves
Goalie categories split into two kinds. Counting stats (wins, saves, shutouts, shots against, games started) only go up, so every start helps or does nothing. Ratio stats (goals-against average and save percentage) can go either way, so a bad start can cost a category you were winning. Late in a head-to-head week, usually Saturday or Sunday, the question is whether the counting categories still in play are worth more than the ratios you would risk. Sitting a goalie protects GAA and SV%, but it gives up any chance at wins, saves or a shutout. Starting one chases those, and how much it risks depends on the cushion you have built.
The cushion is easier to judge than it looks. Your GAA after one more start is (goals against + goals tonight) × 60 ÷ (minutes + 60), so in a seven-start week a team GAA of 2.73 against 2.77 holds through two goals allowed and is a coin flip at three. Save percentage depends on shots: on 23 shots, a .907 against .900 lead survives three goals. A strong team at home suppresses shots and goals and adds win probability, so the same cushion is safer behind a good defence. A backup on the second night of a back-to-back is the opposite. Two goalies in the same game cannot both win, so if your opponent's goalie faces yours, a win for you is also a win denied to them.
The opponent matters as much as your own lineup. If they have no moves left and their goalie is unlikely to start, their totals are close to final and you are playing against fixed numbers. If they can still stream a goalie, a small lead in saves or wins is less safe, and protecting your ratios may be the only category plan that holds. In "most categories" leagues, a locked-in 2–2 split in goalie categories can be the right result if your skaters are winning the rest. In "each category" leagues every category point counts, and a 40% chance at a tie in wins can be worth more than a few points of GAA risk. That trade-off is what this calculator puts a number on.

How it works
- Type your week-to-date goalie totals for both teams as your app shows them (W, GAA, SV, SV%). Saves and a three-decimal SV% give the exact shots and goals against. A two-decimal GAA gives your minutes to within about a minute, and the calculator keeps that range instead of guessing.
- Add each team's goalies. Their remaining games this week load with a start probability, its reasons (LineupExperts status, rotation, back-to-backs) and a per-start projection of shots, goals against and win chance.
- Every remaining NHL game is simulated thousands of times. Two goalies of the same team never both start, and two goalies facing each other can never both win. Ties go to overtime, and a five-goal night sometimes gets the hook.
- Every lineup of your goalies (start or bench each game) is scored on the same simulated nights with your league's categories and points. The recommendation is the lineup with the most expected points, or the best chance of winning the number of goalie categories you need.
- If your lineup locks game by game, it also tries "if X is not starting, start Y" plans when X's starter is usually confirmed before Y's game locks.
- When your opponent still has choices or moves left, each lineup is scored against their best reply, including streamed goalie starts.

Frequently asked questions
How is GAA calculated in fantasy hockey?
Goals against × 60 ÷ minutes played. Your team GAA pools every goalie who counted for you that week: add up their goals against and their minutes, then divide. It is not an average of each goalie's GAA, which is why one bad start in a light week moves it so much. Apps show it to two decimals, so this calculator works out the minutes range your displayed GAA allows.
How is save percentage calculated?
Saves ÷ shots against, or (shots − goals against) ÷ shots. Like GAA it is pooled across your goalies. Because apps show saves and a three-decimal SV%, the calculator can recover your exact shots and goals against from those two numbers.
Should I bench my goalie on Sunday to protect GAA and SV%?
Only when the counting categories you would give up (wins, saves, shutouts) are worth less than the ratio categories you would risk. If you are ahead in GAA and SV% and cannot catch wins, benching usually wins. If saves or a tie in wins is still live and your goalie projects well, starting often scores more. The calculator plays out every lineup and shows the expected matchup points for each.
How many goals can my goalie allow and still win GAA?
Find the largest number of goals x where (your goals against + x) × 60 ÷ (your minutes + 60) stays below your opponent's GAA. The calculator shows that cushion for one start and for all your remaining starts, and flags when the answer depends on GAA rounding. Save percentage has its own cushion based on the shots your goalie is projected to face.
What happens if I miss the weekly goalie minimum?
In Yahoo leagues the default minimum is 3 goalie appearances a week. A team that misses it wins no goalie categories. An appearance means getting into a game, so a relief appearance counts. Commissioners can change the number, and ESPN and Fantrax leagues set their own rules, so check your league settings. Enter your games played and minimum in League settings and the calculator scores a forfeit correctly.
Does it account for what my opponent will do?
Yes. Add the opponent's remaining goalies and mark whether each is in their lineup, benched, or their choice. Enter their moves left and each one can become a streamed goalie start. When they have choices, every lineup is scored against the opponent's best reply, because lineups are visible in every major app.
Where do the start probabilities and projections come from?
Start chances come from our goalie start model (rotation, rest, back-to-backs, recent workload) with LineupExperts confirmations layered on top. A Confirmed starter is about 97%. Each start is projected from both teams' shot rates and shot quality and the goalie's save talent: shots against, goals against, save percentage and the chance of a win. Both refresh through the day.
How do ties and "most categories" leagues change the answer?
In "each category" leagues every goalie category is its own win, tie or loss, worth points (often 2 for a win and 1 for a tie), so the calculator maximizes expected points. In "most categories" leagues you only need enough categories to win the week, so pick "Win a set number of goalie categories" and it maximizes the chance of reaching that number instead. That can favour benching to lock in a split.
