A high "by luck" chance means the run is what his normal rate produces anyway: noise, not a hot hand.

Goal droughts

Players who normally score (0.3+ goals per game) without a goal in 8+ games. Expected goals (xG) separate bad luck from a real slump: a long drought with several xG behind it is unlucky.

Do streaks predict the next game?

No. We took every skater-game from 2017-18 to 2020-21 and 2021-22 to 2025-26 (skaters with 20+ games that season) and compared how often players scored a point in the next game with their own season rate (leaving that game out).

Actual next-game point rate vs the player's own expected rate. Players on long streaks score at or slightly below their usual rate in both halves, and players in goal droughts do not catch up (31.0% vs 33.4% and 28.1% vs 34.1% for 8-11 game droughts, n 857). Prop prices already follow player rates, so there is no streak bet here; testing one would need stored anytime-goal prices for players in droughts across several seasons.

How to read a streak

A streak here is the run of a player's most recent games that all had a point (or a goal, or an assist). A drought is the run of recent games without one, shown only for players who normally score. Each run shows the goals, shots and shooting percentage inside it, the individual expected goals (xG) the player created, and the chance a player with his usual rate has a run that long somewhere in an 84-game season by luck alone.

Streaks are mostly noise. Over 2017-18 to 2020-21 and 2021-22 to 2025-26, skaters on a five-to-seven-game point streak scored in their next game at 54.6% vs 58.5% and 58.8% vs 61.2% of their own season rate, a little below it. Players eight to eleven games into a goal drought scored next time at 31.0% vs 33.4% and 28.1% vs 34.1%: not due, either.

For fantasy and betting, trust the season rate and the xG, not the run. A hot streak built on 25% shooting will cool; a drought with plenty of xG behind it is bad luck. Prop prices already follow player rates, so a streak alone is not an edge.

Frequently asked questions

Who has the longest point streak in the NHL right now?

Connor McDavid has the longest active point streak in 2026-27: 9 straight games with a point, through Oct 20, 2026.

What is the NHL record for the longest point streak?

Wayne Gretzky's 51 straight games with a point in 1983-84 is the NHL record. Mario Lemieux's 46 in 1989-90 is second.

Do point streaks predict the next game?

No. From 2017-18 to 2025-26, skaters on a five-to-seven-game point streak scored in their next game at 54.6% vs 58.5% of their own season rate in the first half of that span and 58.8% vs 61.2% in the second. A streak is mostly noise.

Is a player in a goal drought due to score?

No. Players eight to eleven games into a drought scored in their next game at 31.0% vs 33.4% and 28.1% vs 34.1% of their season rate. Check his expected goals: a drought with plenty of xG is bad luck, one without it is a real slump.
