Who benefits when a player is out?

An injury opens ice time and a power-play spot. We check every game the team played without the player and rank the teammates who absorbed his minutes, with the evidence, so you know which pickup is real.

Brock FaberD · MIN

Injured Reserve

30:15 TOI · D1 · PP2 · 21% PP share · Skull: Faber left Friday's preseason contest against the Stars in the second period with his confirmed skull fracture. The 24-year-old's status will be closely monitored in the coming days until a timetable for his return is provided. Faber's role is not one that can be easily filled, as he exploded for 15 goals, 51 points, 173 shots on net and 148 blocked shots across 80 regular-season games in the 2025-26 campaign. He's a worthy candidate to occupy the IR spot in fantasy until he's able to return to Minnesota's top defensive pairing.

In 3 games without Brock Faber, Danila Yurov played 16:05 (+3:02) and took PP1 in 2 of them (0% of games with him).

Charlie McAvoyD · BOS

Suspension

24:58 TOI · D2 · PP1 · 58% PP share · Suspension: McAvoy is set to serve a six-game suspension to begin the year after slashing the Sabres' Zach Benson during the Bruins' first-round series loss last season. While the right-shot defenseman's draft stock may have dipped ever so slightly because of the suspension, fantasy managers should keep in mind that McAvoy is coming off a career-best year (11 goals, 61 points in 69 regular-season games), so don't let him fall too far in upcoming drafts. The 28-year-old is eligible to make his 2026-27 debut Oct. 13 in San Jose.

In 13 games without Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm played 23:19 (+1:59), took PP1 in 13 of them (3% of games with him) and moved up to his D2 slot in 7.

Gustav ForslingD · FLA

Day-To-Day

22:58 TOI · D1 · PP2 · 13% PP share · Upper Body: day-to-day

In 2 games without Gustav Forsling, Seth Jones played 26:08 (+2:20), PP share went 53% → 58% and moved up to his D1 slot in 1.

21:35 TOI · D1 · PP2 · 1% PP share · Contract Dispute: Edvinsson decided to attend the Red Wings' training camp, which was an unusual step for a restricted free agent. However, the two sides have been unable to agree to terms, so he remains unsigned. Given that Edvinsson opted to head to Sweden rather than stay in Detroit, it wouldn't be surprising if it turned out that the 23-year-old defenseman isn't optimistic about signing a deal in the coming days.

In 10 games without Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson played 19:33 (+4:07) and moved up to his D1 slot in 2.

Connor BedardC · CHI

Injured Reserve

20:24 TOI · L2 · PP1 · 63% PP share · Shoulder: Davidson adds that a timeline may be established at some point in October. Bedard is expected to be out until at least November, based on the initial four-month estimate after he underwent his procedure in July. Fantasy managers with an open injured reserve slot shouldn't hesitate to stash Bedard until he's activated for his season debut.

In 13 games without Connor Bedard, Matt Grzelcyk played 19:04 (+2:35) and took PP1 in 4 of them (4% of games with him).

How it works

  1. We find every game the injured player missed while on the team's roster this season and last (including the current absence), and compare each teammate's ice time, power-play share and PP1 usage in those games with the games the injured player dressed.
  2. Changes are shrunk toward zero when the sample is small (a change over n games counts n / (n + 2) of its size), so one odd game does not crown a beneficiary.
  3. When there is little or no absence history, we fall back to line adjacency from our shift-based line detection: the next man up on his power-play unit (the top PP2 player at his position) and the best player one line or pair below his.
  4. Players are ranked by expected fantasy opportunity: TOI minutes, plus power-play share (10 points of PP share ≈ 1.2 minutes of even-strength TOI), plus PP1 gains.

Data: NHL shift charts processed by our on-ice engine (this season and last), line and PP unit detection from shared ice time, and the ESPN injury report.

FAQ

How do you decide who benefits from an injury?

We look at the games the team actually played without the injured player and measure how each teammate's ice time, power-play share and PP1 usage changed. When there is no history yet, we use line adjacency: the next man up on his power-play unit and on the line below his.

Where does the injury list come from?

The injury list comes from the public ESPN NHL injury report, matched to NHL player ids by name and team. You can also pick any skater to see what happens when he sits.

Does a healthy scratch count as an absence?

Yes. Any team game the player did not dress for while he was on the roster counts, because the lineup question for fantasy is the same whether he is hurt or scratched.

How reliable is this?

It improves with the number of games without the player. We show the game count for every beneficiary, mark line-adjacency estimates separately, and only index a player page once there are at least three games without him.
