NHL daily fantasy scoring: DraftKings and FanDuel explained
NHL daily fantasy (DFS) is a one-slate contest: you pick a lineup under a salary cap on DraftKings or FanDuel and score only on that night’s games. On DraftKings Classic a goal is worth 8.5 points, an assist 5, a shot on goal 1.5 and a blocked shot 1.3, with bonuses for hat tricks, five or more shots, three or more blocks and three or more points. Goalies earn 6 for a win and 0.7 per save and lose 3.5 per goal against. FanDuel uses its own values, so check its scoring page before you build.
- One night, one lineup, a salary cap: no waivers, no weekly matchup.
- Goals and assists dominate, but shots and blocks give a floor and unlock bonuses.
- A goal pays the scorer and up to two assisters, so stacking linemates is the core strategy.
- The goalie win is one of the biggest single swings on a slate; confirm your starter.

How FanDuel scoring differs
FanDuel’s NHL scoring follows the same shape: goals and assists are worth the most, shots and blocked shots both count, and a goalie win is one of the largest single scores on a slate. The exact values, roster spots and bonuses differ from DraftKings, and FanDuel can change them between seasons, so read FanDuel’s NHL scoring page before you build. Edgehalla projects FanDuel points separately from DraftKings points for that reason.
How DFS differs from season-long fantasy
| Daily fantasy | Season-long | |
|---|---|---|
| Time frame | One slate of games | A week or a full season |
| Roster | New lineup each slate under a salary cap | Drafted team plus waivers and trades |
| What matters | Ceiling on one night, salary value, how often others pick a player | Volume and consistency over many games |
| Goalies | One start; a win or a loss swings your night | Many starts; ratios and wins average out |
| Correlation | Central: linemates score together | Minor |
The biggest difference is variance. In season-long, a player’s bad night is one of 82. In DFS it is the whole contest, so you are choosing between safer lineups for contests where finishing in the top half is enough and more correlated, higher-ceiling lineups for large-field tournaments where only the top few finishes matter.
Stacking: why linemates belong together
A single goal on DraftKings pays 8.5 to the scorer and 5 to each player credited with an assist. If all three are in your lineup, that one goal is worth 18.5 points to you. That is why most NHL DFS lineups are built around stacks: forwards from the same line, often with a defenseman from the same power-play unit.
- Line stacks: two or three forwards who play together at even strength.
- Power-play stacks: players from the same first unit, who share the most dangerous minutes of the game.
- Game stacks: players from both teams in a game expected to be high scoring.
- Bring the data, not the hunch: line-level correlation is real, but the history of one specific pair is noisy, so don’t over-read it.
Shots, blocks and the bonus thresholds
Shots and blocks are the floor of a DraftKings score. Four shots alone are 6 points; a fifth adds 1.5 more plus the 3-point bonus, so the jump from four shots to five is worth 4.5 points. A defenseman with three blocked shots earns 3.9 plus the 3-point bonus, 6.9 points before he touches the puck on offense.
For goalies, 30 saves and 2 goals against in a win is 21 + 6 − 7 = 20 points; five more saves add 3.5 and the 35-save bonus. A goalie facing a heavy shot load can score well even in an overtime loss (worth 2), while a blowout loss is costly at -3.5 per goal.
What to check before lock
- Starting goalies. A goalie who doesn’t start scores zero, and the opposing starter changes every skater’s outlook. Wait for confirmations on late games if you can.
- Lines and power-play units. Morning skate and warmup changes move players onto or off the first unit; a promotion at a low salary is the best value on most slates.
- Rest and travel. Teams on the second night of a back-to-back, especially with a backup in net, give up more; the team facing them gains.
- Shot volume against the opponent. Teams that allow a lot of shots raise every opposing skater’s floor through the 1.5-point shots and the 5-shot bonus.
- Late scratches. Check again just before lock; a swap is cheaper than a zero.

Frequently asked questions
How does DraftKings NHL scoring work?
On DraftKings Classic, skaters earn 8.5 per goal, 5 per assist, 1.5 per shot on goal and 1.3 per blocked shot, with a +2 shorthanded point bonus, 1.5 per shootout goal and +3 bonuses for a hat trick, 5+ shots, 3+ blocks and 3+ points. Goalies earn 6 per win, 0.7 per save, -3.5 per goal against, +4 for a shutout, 2 for an overtime loss and +3 for 35+ saves.
How is FanDuel NHL scoring different from DraftKings?
Both put goals and assists first and count shots and blocked shots, and both make a goalie win a big swing. The point values, bonuses and roster rules differ, and FanDuel publishes its own scoring page, so check it before you build. Edgehalla projects FanDuel and DraftKings points separately.
What is a stack in NHL DFS?
A stack is a group of players whose scores rise together, usually forwards from the same line or players from the same power-play unit. One goal can pay the scorer and two assisters, so a stack turns a single goal into three players’ worth of points.
Are blocked shots worth anything on DraftKings?
Yes. Each blocked shot is 1.3 points, and three or more add a 3-point bonus. That gives shot-blocking defensemen a dependable floor, which is useful at lower salaries.
How many points is a goalie win worth on DraftKings?
The win itself is 6 points. With 30 saves (21 points) and 2 goals against (-7), a typical win scores about 20. A shutout adds 4 and 35 or more saves adds 3.
Is daily fantasy hockey the same as season-long fantasy?
No. DFS scores one slate with a new salary-capped lineup each time, so ceiling, salary value and correlation matter most. Season-long leagues reward volume and consistency over a week or a full season.
