What is a banger league in fantasy hockey?

A banger league is a head-to-head category league that also counts hits and blocked shots, so physical players who rarely score become weekly assets. Many banger leagues count penalty minutes too. No platform defines one official banger set, but a common build is eight skater categories (goals, assists, plus/minus, penalty minutes, power-play points, shots on goal, hits and blocked shots) and four goalie categories (wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts). With hits, blocks and PIM making up three of the eight skater categories, nearly half the skater scoreboard is won by grinders and defensemen, not just scorers.

  • Banger = a category league that counts HIT and BLK, usually with PIM as well.
  • Winning blocks is worth exactly as much as winning goals.
  • The most valuable players score and hit, or shoot and block: they move four or five categories.
  • Hit and block rates follow role and style, so they are steadier week to week than goals.

What a banger league counts

The name comes from “bangers”, players who bang bodies. Hits and blocked shots are often called peripheral stats because they sit outside the scoring stats. Yahoo’s default head-to-head setup already counts hits; a banger league adds blocks and usually penalty minutes, turning six skater categories into seven or eight.

Why bangers change player values

Category leagues weigh every category the same. In an eight-category banger league, hits, blocks and PIM are three of the eight skater categories. A defenseman who blocks two shots a night wins you as much of the scoreboard as a sniper who scores, and he costs far less.

  • Power forwards who shoot, hit and take penalties move G, SOG, HIT and PIM at once. They are the most valuable players in the format after the elite scorers.
  • Shot-blocking defensemen who also play the power play move BLK, PPP and often +/-. They rise sharply compared with a standard league.
  • Skilled players who don’t hit or block help in four or five categories at most and lose some value. Elite scorers are still elite; the middle tier drops.
  • Pure hitters on the fourth line help in one or two categories. Useful streamers, rarely worth a draft pick.

Hits and blocks are steadier than goals

A player’s hit and block rates come from his role and style: how much he plays, whether he kills penalties, how often his team defends. Goals depend on shooting percentage, which swings from week to week. That makes hits and blocks easier to plan around: a player averaging three hits a game will likely keep doing it as long as his role holds steady, while a forward on a scoring streak may not be.

Two things move them. First, the opponent: teams that shoot a lot give the other side’s defensemen more shots to block, and some teams draw more hits. Second, the arena: hits are counted by the home team’s scorers, and some rinks have historically credited more hits than others. Edgehalla’s arena page shows which rinks inflated hits and what changed.

How to win a banger league

  1. Draft multi-category players first. Players who score and add hits or blocks are scarce; pure hitters and blockers are plentiful later and on waivers.
  2. Don’t neglect defense. You need blocks every week, and the best source is defensemen with heavy minutes and penalty-kill time.
  3. Stream peripherals with the schedule. A hitter with four games this week beats a slightly better hitter with two.
  4. Use the matchup. Late in the week, look at which of HIT, BLK and PIM are close and stream for those only.
  5. Pick your punt carefully, if any. Plus/minus is the usual punt. Punting hits or blocks gives up the cheapest categories to win, which rarely pays.

Frequently asked questions

What is a banger league?

A banger league is a fantasy hockey category league that counts hits and blocked shots, and often penalty minutes, alongside the usual scoring stats. Physical forwards and shot-blocking defensemen gain value because those categories count as much as goals.

What categories are in a banger league?

There is no official set. A common build is goals, assists, plus/minus, penalty minutes, power-play points, shots on goal, hits and blocked shots for skaters, with wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts for goalies. Some leagues drop PIM or add faceoffs won.

Is Yahoo’s default league a banger league?

Not quite. Yahoo’s 2026-27 head-to-head default counts hits but not blocked shots or penalty minutes. Most managers call a league a banger league once it counts both hits and blocks.

Who are the best players in banger leagues?

Players who score and also hit, block or take penalties, because they move four or five categories every night. After the elite scorers, power forwards and minute-eating defensemen who block shots and play the power play rise the most.

Should I draft pure hitters in a banger league?

Usually not early. Many depth players hit or block a lot, so those stats are easy to find on waivers. Draft players who add peripherals on top of scoring, then stream pure hitters and blockers when the schedule gives them extra games.

Are hits and blocks predictable?

More than goals. Hit and block rates follow a player’s role, minutes and style, so they repeat well while the role holds. Goals depend on shooting percentage, which swings a lot week to week. The opponent and arena scorers also move hit totals.

How do I set Edgehalla to banger scoring?

Open Who Should I Start with the Banger profile (the links on this page do it for you). It scores G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, SOG, HIT and BLK, saves your choice, and carries it to the player comparison pages.
