  • 2005: Plateau begins

Linemen averaged 253 lb in 1970 and 277 lb in 1990. Then the 1990s added about 30 pounds: 300 lb by 1995, 309 lb by 2000. From 2005 on, the mean never left 312 lb–314 lb.

The 300-pound floor is now the norm. In 2025, eight in ten linemen were listed between 300 lb and 330 lb.

First season = his first year at OL on any roster in the file since 1950. Before about 1990 many players carry one weight for their whole career.

Newcomers tell the real story, because a first listing cannot be stale. Their weights rose steadily from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, then edged up again around 2005. The 1994 class (298 lb) weighed the same as 1993's (299 lb).

DL = DL, DE, DT, NT. LB = LB, OLB, ILB, MLB. DB = DB, CB, S, FS, SS. Each panel is its own group’s mean minus its 2015 mean. Most groups peaked around 2015.

Defensive linemen kept growing after the blockers stopped. They averaged 287 lb in 2000 and 297 lb in 2015, then slimmed to 291 lb by 2025.

From 2015 to 2025 linebackers went from 246 lb to 240 lb, and receivers from 202 lb to 198 lb. Defenders got lighter. The men blocking them did not.

One caution: the roster files changed in 2016. Offensive line rows went from 326 in 2015 to 511 in 2016, as practice-squad, cut and reserve players were added. That change lines up with the 2015 baseline. Active players alone show the same decline: defensive linemen -5.5 lb and linebackers -6.3 lb from 2015 to 2025.

How we measured

  • One row per player per season from nflverse rosters, using that season’s listed weight. Repeated rows for the same player are counted once.
  • Offensive line is roster position OL, T, G, C, OT or OG. Older rosters only say OL; 2002–2015 split tackles, guards and centres.
  • Returning and first-season linemen are matched by player id, or by name and birth date where older rows lack an id.
  • Snap weighting uses nflverse participation files. They cover 2016–2025; we used 2016, 2019 and 2022–25.
