What makes an NHL team fast
NHL EDGE tracks every skater many times a second. A speed burst is any stretch where a skater tops 22 mph. We rank teams by 22+ mph bursts per game, because the NHL publishes season totals and a team with more games would lead on volume alone. In 2026-27, the Edmonton Oilers lead with 4.67 bursts a game; the league average is 1.21.
Top speed is one skater's single fastest moment, so a team's top speed barely repeats from one season to the next (r near 0.1 in our 2021-26 data). Burst volume is different: it comes from the whole lineup, it repeats, and early in a season it is still built on only about 11 games a team, so read small gaps as noise.
In our research the speed gap between two teams tracked which side controlled expected goals at five on five. A simple "bet the faster team" moneyline returned +3.2% on 562 games from 2024 to 2026, but the uncertainty runs from -3.8% to +10.5%, so it is not an edge yet, and game totals already price two fast teams. Use speed as context for a matchup, not as a bet.

Which NHL team has the fastest skater this season?
