What Assists per 60 measures
This board ranks skaters by assists per 60 minutes of ice time in all situations, so a fourth-liner who plays 9 minutes is compared fairly with a top-pair defenseman who plays 25. Players under the minimum-minutes cutoff are hidden. Assists per 60 minutes of ice time, all situations.
Rates settle faster than totals but need minutes: early in the season, low-minute players swing the most. A row needs at least 492 minutes to qualify, a bar that rises as the season goes on, so early leaders with a handful of games do not crowd the top.
Assists credit the last one or two players to touch the puck before a goal. Playmaking centres and power-play quarterbacks on the blue line top the list, and secondary assists make the totals noisier than goals suggest. Rates surface low-minute players who already produce; they are the ones to grab when an injury opens up ice time. In 2017-18, 601 skaters qualify for this board; the median is 0.89 and Mathew Barzal leads at 2.59.
