What Shutouts measures
This board ranks NHL goalies by shutouts, regular season only. Pick any season back to 2017-18 above the table. Complete-game shutouts, regular season.
Shutouts are rare and lucky: season-to-season they barely repeat beyond what starts and team defence explain.
A shutout is credited to a goalie who plays the whole game without allowing a goal. Combined shutouts by two goalies are credited to neither. The league leader usually has five to ten. Shutouts are a scarce category and swing weekly matchups. They come in streaks and need starts, so the leaders are mostly workhorse starters. In 2020-21, 3 goalies qualify for this board; the median is 1 and Philipp Grubauer leads at 7.
