Shutouts are rare, valuable goalie events. We compute a shutout estimate internally, but it is not published yet: in our backtests its calibration among the top goalies was not good enough, so we are validating it against live results this season before showing numbers. What makes a shutout? A goalie is credited with a shutout when he plays the whole game and allows no goals. Shootout goals do not count.
How often
in recent seasons roughly 4-6% of starts ended in a shutout.
What we are testing
an estimate of the form starts × c × e^(−goals against per start), where c is refitted on the current season every night. It got the league total close but not the top goalies, so it stays unpublished for now.
