What Goals Against Average measures

This board ranks NHL goalies by goals against average, lowest first, regular season only, among goalies with enough starts. Pick any season back to 2017-18 above the table. Goals allowed per 60 minutes in net, lowest first (minimum starts scale with the season).

GAA mixes goalie and team: shots against vary a lot by team. Read it next to save percentage. A row needs at least 25 starts to qualify, a bar that rises as the season goes on, so early leaders with a handful of games do not crowd the top.

Goals against average is goals allowed per 60 minutes in net. Lower is better: below 2.50 over a full season is excellent, and the team's defence shapes it as much as the goalie. GAA is a ratio category, ranked here from lowest. Like SV%, a starter behind a strong defence often looks better than his save percentage says. In 2017-18, 45 goalies qualify for this board; the median is 2.71 and Carter Hutton leads at 2.09.
