Faceoffs won is a center-driven category in many Yahoo and ESPN leagues. These projections multiply how many draws a center has been taking per 60 minutes by his projected ice time, then by his faceoff percentage shrunk toward the league average. faceoffs taken per 60 minutes from the player's own recent history (it is a stable role stat), times LineupExperts' projected ice time.

Win rate

faceoff percentage shrunk toward 50.5% for centers with the weight of about 96 faceoffs, so a center who has won 60% of 50 draws projects closer to 54%, while a veteran with thousands of draws keeps nearly his own rate.

Projected FOW = faceoffs taken × FO%. Faceoffs lost is the remainder.

What it does not use

the opposing center or game script.

Pro Tip: A 52% center taking 20 draws a night wins more faceoffs than a 58% specialist taking 10. Sort by FOW, not FO%, for the category.

Faceoffs taken per 60 minutes (the player's recent rate) times LineupExperts' projected ice time gives volume; volume times his shrunk faceoff percentage gives projected faceoffs won.

Faceoff percentage is shrunk toward 50.5% in proportion to how few draws back it up. Small samples are pulled in a lot, large ones barely.

Not in this table: it uses the player's own volume and win rate only. Our Faceoffs Tonight page projects each center against tonight's likely opposing centers, adjusted for home ice, dot side and handedness.

Faceoff volume is one of the most stable stats in hockey. In our backtest projected faceoffs won beat a naive per-game rate at every cutoff, with top deciles within about 4% of actual totals.
